The reaction of selected Czech and German periodicals of the First Czechoslovak Republic to the Anschluss of Austria

This bachelor thesis explores the Anschluss of Austria and its media image in selected Czech and German periodicals of First Czechoslovak Republic. The aim of the thesis is to present the narratives that shaped the news coverage of this historical event, and at the same time to show the influence of state-controlled mechanisms on the form of news about the Anschluss. The first chapter of the thesis introduces the media landscape of the First Republic, consideringthe connection of the Czechoslovak News Agency (ČTK) to state authorities or censorship measures during this period.In particular,it focuses on the phenomenon of party and non-party newspapers, as it is party and non-party periodicals across the political spectrum that are analysed in the second chapter of the thesis.In this section, the circumstances of the Anschluss are first briefly described, then the thesis analyses the impact of this situation on Czechoslovakia's international position and diplomatic relations. The analysis itself relies on archival findings that document the communication between the ČTK and state institutions during March 1938, and uses these findings to evaluate the content and wording of the articles in the various periodicals.Most of the periodicals agree that Czechoslovakia was not in danger after the Anschluss...

Master's thesis focuses on the potential relationships between the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche and the ideology of Nazism. With an approach that emphasizes the complexity and wide range of this issue, the study strives to analyze Nietzsche's texts and interpret them in the context of Nazi ideology. The work is structured into four chapters, focusing on Nietzsche's philosophical concepts, ethics, critical views on his philosophy from other authors, and political aspects of his ethics. The key point is Nietzsche's ethics and its potential connections with Nazism. This work attempts to provide a deeper and more objective view of Nietzsche's philosophy, thereby contributing to a better understanding of his work and possible correlations with Nazi ideology.

The Bayreuth Music Festival in Nazi Germany

The topic of the bachelor thesis is the Bayreuth Music Festival in Nazi Germany. It is an important music and theatre festival associated mainly with the personality of the German composer Richard Wagner, who founded it. This composer is often associated with Nazi ideology for several reasons, which will be discussed in more detail in the theoretical part of the thesis, which also deals with the issue of Nazi propaganda in the media and propaganda in connection with music. After the appointment of Adolf Hitler as German Chancellor and the rise of Nazism to power, the Bayreuth Music Festival, like other cultural events, was brought under Nazi control and used as a political tool for propaganda. Their operation was thus significantly affected at this time and subsequently during the Second World War. The practical part of the thesis focuses primarily on the course and form of the Bayreuth Music Festival between 1933 and 1945, as well as on Adolf Hitler's participation in the festival regarding, among other things, his political speeches, the organization of receptions for artists, the honouring of the late composer Richard Wagner, and the financing of the festival. His personal relations with the Wagner family and the Bayreuth Music Festival are also mentioned in connection with the press.

Jews in the German and Austrian Armed Forces 1914 -1945

The main aim of this thesis is to introduce the development of the Jewish ethnic group within German language area, also to map and describe their involvement in both world wars in which their representatives had fought, first in the armies of central powers, and later in the army of the Third Reich. Besides chronology of war occurrences, there is a description of structural development of the German and Austrian armed forces with regard to the Jewish ethnic group of both countries and their performance of military service from the moment of introduction of general compulsory military service until the German capitulation in May 1945. This work gives a very detailed description of census of the Jews in German army that began on 1st November 1916 and also of its political consequences in post-war years. In the context of the Third Reich and the German Jews development, the complex of Nazi discriminatory legal standards and their link to the German military power are introduced and described here. This thesis also contains short personal stories of chosen Jewish war veterans of the first and Second World War that are complemented with a lot of personal information obtained mostly from military archives. The Roma (Gypsi) Holocaust

The central theme of this thesis is the Roma Holocaust. Through the historical realities the Roma Holocaust is placed in a legal but also a wider sociological context. The individual stages in the development of the legal status of the Roma minority from approximately the thirteenth century form the internal division of the first mainly historical part of the work. The aim of this part is to point out the causes that to a certain extent determined the investigated events during the Second World War, but also the post-war development and the current status quo. The second part of the work directly analyzes the Roma Holocaust, while the emphasis is on the development in Nazi Germany but also on the development in the individual successor state units of the first Czechoslovak Republic. The differences in the state policy towards the Roma minority during the Second World War, which led to various consequences, are illustrated on the mentioned state units. The third and last part of the thesis is devoted to the development after the Second World War and its purpose is to point out the process of reflecting on the Roma Holocaust and the significance of this process for post-war society, both within the united Czechoslovakia and the independent Czech Republic. Interwar Berlin in Isherwood's Berlin Stories

This thesis aims to entangle and analyse the social, cultural and political problematics concerning two major works of Christopher Isherwood - Goodbye to Berlin and Mr Norris Changes Trains, in other words Berlin Stories. Both of these are set in interwar Germany thus this thesis approaches the topic both from the perspective of scrutinizing the Weimar Republic and its domestic affairs and also interpreting the novels from the perspective of social and cultural analysis based on the findings from the theoretical part. The main question is whether Christopher Isherwood really is unbiased and purely factual author as he is often interpreted as far as his literary contribution is concerned. Furthermore, this thesis aims to scrutinize Isherwood's point of view embedded in his works and to answer the question to what extent are his works autobiographical.

Propaganda in Sport: The exploitation of athletes by the Nazi regime

This thesis deals with the misuse of the phenomenon of sport and athletes themselves for the purposes of Nazi propaganda. The thesis is introduced by the theoretical grounding of the phenomenon of sport in society, its political significance and the relationship between the media and sport. The term propaganda, its history and typology, and types of propaganda are also introduced. The chapter then turns to the topic of Nazi propaganda itself - the Nazi ideology, the foundations of Nazi propaganda and the means it employed, including its focus on sport and physical culture, are introduced. After a theoretical introduction, the thesis introduces personalities and events that are subjected to a qualitative content analysis in the contemporary media (Nazi, Sudeten German and Czechoslovak) and on whose example the manifestations of propaganda will be examined. The first of these personalities to be examined is the German boxer Max Schmeling, in the context of his victory in a fight with the dark- skinned American boxer Joe Louis in June 1936, which was a fitting confirmation of the theory of white supremacy for German propaganda.
